The global economic downturn is making many businesses blanch, but Dariusz Milek, Poland’s low-cost shoe king, sees nothing but opportunity ahead for his company NG2.
“People are counting their money now. Paradoxically, that helps us,” he says with a grin, predicting that this year’s profits will be unaffected by the crisis.
Mr Milek’s confidence stems from the fact that he has made a fortune out of being able to sell shoes at cut-rate prices through 585 shops in Poland and 29 in the Czech Republic. The chain is likely to be increasingly attractive in the recession as Poles and Czechs keep a close watch on their wallets. His conviction that they will continue to want cheap shoes has prompted Mr Milek to plan another 132 discount shops this year. (more)
